Piracy in Indonesia not that bad

London, 21 June 2006

When I prepare myself to go to London, everybody warn me to prepare an answer about piracy. As we all know that Indonesia is one of the biggest country with piracy in the world. So I prepare an answer that although there’s so much of piracy, the sales of original CD, cassette and ring back tone were good too. Although it’s better that there’s no piracy like in the UK (less than 1% and I never see pirated CDs here) but at least our sales in Indonesia was quite made me proud during the meeting with other 9 finalist of IYMEY music 2006 (Argentina, Nigeria, Poland, Morocco, India, Lebanon, Venezuela, Kenya and Estonia).

But from the sharing session about piracy in our each country, then I learned that in Lebanon after you finish making your album then you bring your master to all big pirates so they become a major distribution because in Lebanon, musician make money only from live performance and advertisement. Not making any money from CDs.

Wow, it so scary if Indonesia will become like that. We have to do something.

  1. There’ll be no more CDs.
Everything will me mp3 online. And no more vinyl too.
DJs will be playing with Serato from their laptops.

  7. That is kinda scary too.
This situation makes me angry that the fact that everything is downloaded at cheap prices. Well, I find this a very important topic. It is somehow related to how there are so many pirated video or computer games they sell here (i’m a gamer, by the way.) For me, it makes me dislike my own country 🙁

    1. We need more people like you Kevin… like when I’m in the UK its very hard to find any pirated CDs because people still purchase their music as well as game… and if we look closely, when people bought the original game they use it until the end… not like here where kids didn’t appreciate their game because its very very cheap pirated DVD copy.
